Hi!
Scapegoats have a guilty conscience and this comes from being taught that they are bad and being accused constantly of doing "bad things" when they didn't. Scapegoats not only endure false accusations, they have smear campaigns ran on them. This is where their tormentor tells others how "bad" they are.
Having a guilty conscience keeps us from:
Setting and holding boundaries
Seeking help
Advocating for our wants and needs
Check out this video to learn more of how being scapegoated impacts us.
Another issue the guilty conscience causes for scapegoats, is that they are are taught to focus on the needs of others while they feel bad or are treated poorly. Instead of learning there needs to be give and take in relationships, scapegoats learn it's their job to meet the needs of others while they are suffering.
